-
Write yourself some bullet points on what you want to say. Remember to make your comments relative to the type of company or role you want. Example – if you’re seeking a job in forensics, say something around your ‘attention to detail,’ add something loving science or analytics and about solving mysteries.
-
Tell people about your values, often nowadays, companies are looking for a great cultural fit as much as qualifications so what are you values? If you are not sure, take a look at our list here there’s loads to chose from but we recommend focussing on 4-6 that are truly you.
-
Ask those around you what they see as your key strengths – tell us about these on your video. Employers love to know what others think of you! Not sure who to ask or feeling about shy about asking someone? Why not think back to the comments your current or a previous boss made about you and use these.
-
Talk about what’s important to you in a new role (and don’t focus on the salary, that comes later) eg talk about your vision for your life, your career plans, how you like to work, how you like to engage with others, what’s made you happiest when working.
-
Keep your video to 60-90 seconds maximum. You don’t need to tell people about your whole life and working career, you just have to show them who you are and get their interest. There will be other opportunities to do specific role based videos.
-
Have some fun with this – practice before doing your recording and then record it in a location that showcases you. Are you a beach person looking for a job in an outdoors role? If so why not record your ‘This is Me’ video on your favourite beach? Want a job in catering? Why not record as you make something in your kitchen? Want a career in working with animals? Include your pets in your video so you showcase your connection with your favourite furry friends.
-
Be honest. Ok so we have all been there and probably over stated our skills or experiences when in an interview but this video is about your truth. Be honest, be real, be you…..we really like who you are and so will others so don’t try and be someone you’re not.
-
Think about your tone of voice when you record. Put some energy into your videos so that they are appealing and demand the interest of the person watching. No one wants to listen to a boring monotone voice so be natural but think about putting some emphasis on key words eg if you say your passionate about something, make sure your voice is passionate and not lifeless.
-
Smile. A few smile go a long way
-
Make as many videos as you like and then chose the one you think is totally you. Remember you are not aiming to produce a studio quality type video, a few stumbles here and there is ok, be natural, be real, be you.
